April 9, 2009 – ABB won orders worth $ 56 million from Algeria's state-owned power company, Sonelgaz, to supply two substations and ten mobile substations. The orders were booked in the first quarter.

One 60-kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated substation (GIS) will replace an existing installation in the country’s capital, Algiers, to meet growing demand for electricity. A second 60-kV GIS will be installed in Oran, Algeria’s second largest city, to supply electricity for a planned recreational and commercial development in the area.

The mobile substations can be used to replace fixed installations temporarily. This enables utilities to carry out maintenance work, respond rapidly to outages and restore power supplies quickly. They can be transported by road trailer and be up and running in less than 24 hours.

“ABB’s innovative technologies are enhancing the performance and reliability of power systems around the world,” said Peter Leupp, head of ABB's Power Systems division. “GIS substations are extremely compact and are the preferred option for use in urban environments.”

ABB will design, engineer, supply, install and commission the substations, including switchgear, power transformers, automation and telecommunications, as well as other auxiliary systems.

ABB pioneered GIS technology in the 1950s and has since delivered around 11,000 installations to more than 70 countries worldwide.

ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 120,000 people.
